  • Forests occupy 23% of the Total Geographical area in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Forests play an important role in Watershed Management & Conservation of Water.
  • Forests intercepts Rain Water, Prevents Soil Erosion, Percolates Rain Water into Soil.

  • Forest Department is actively participating in the Soil and Moisture Conservation Programme launched by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh since 2000.
  • SMC works are being taken up under various schemes like NABARD assisted RIDF schemes , World Bank Aided A. P. Forestry Project, Centrally sponsored schemes, Compensatory Afforestation schemes, District schemes approved by the District Administration.

  • Various Soil and Moisture Conservation works like Contour Trenches, Check Dams, Percolation Tanks, Rock Fill Dams, Sunken gully pits, are being executed under this programme
  • The following are the structures created upto 31.5.2004.
    Trenches 588.41 ( Lakh Cub. Mtrs. )
    Percolation Tanks 32707 Nos.
    Check Dams 9850 Nos.
    Rock Fill Dams 3.488 Lahks.
    Others 1.02 Lahks.

  • About 1844.47 Lakhs cubic meters of water impounding capacity was created by these structures.
  • An amount of Rs. 356.14 Crores was spent under this programme.
  • For the Financial Year 2004-2005, the Government has issued LOC for Rs. 2550.00 lakhs for the first quarter of the year, and the works are in progress
  • Water Harvesting Structures are executed by the "Vana Samrakshana Samithis" (VSS) which are self-help groups.
  • If "Water Harvesting Structures are executed upto saturation level watershed treatment, the impounded water percolates and recharges the ground water and even in drought years, there may not be any water shortage.
  • Future Action Plan:-
    In RIDF X a project has been prepared for Rs. 53.60 Crores and submitted to Government for forwarding it to NABARD for sanction. This project is for a period of 3 financial years i.e., 2004 - 2005 to 2006 - 2007 covering all the 22 districts.
  • a pilot project for raising of Bio Diesel plantation in 15000 ha of forest area in prepared for Rs 39.63 Crores. This project is for a period of 3 financial years i.e., 2004 - 2005 to 2006 - 2007 covering 15 districts. The Project proposal is sent to NABARD for sanction.
