Botanical Name - Vetiveria zizanioides

----- Vetiveria, thouars; F.B.I. V. 7. P. 185. Vetiveria, zizanoides, Nash. (Andropogon squarrosus. Hack non linn. F.); F.B.I. Vol. 7. P. 180. Vern. Wuttee or Wuttay gaddi (Tel). Khas (Hind). The Khas-Khas or Cus-cus grass.

----- A coarse perennial grass from a branching root-stock with spongy, aromatic roots. Culms stout, up to 5 ft., smooth glabrous, covered by compressed sheath; sheath smooth and polished. Leaves (1-3) ft. long, erect, rigid, firm or slightly spongy, glabrous or sometimes hairy on the upper surface towards the base; margins rough. Panicles (6-15) in. long; joints and pedicels glabrous; sessile spikelets muriculate on the keel; upper lemna entire.

----- It is found all over the State round the edges of tanks. This grass is valued for its aromatic roots from which fans, chicks and tatties are made. An oil is extracted from the roots.
