An under-shrub, usually
about 5 ft. high ; branches rounded, velvety. Leaves
simple, 3-6 by 1-1 3/4 in., oblong-lanceolate, sub-acute, rounded
at teh base, sub-coriaceous, glabrescent above, thinly silky pubescent
beneath. Bracts large
membranouos, broadly ovate, folded, each enclosing a short raceme,
frequently with sterile flowers.Flowers
purple, 1/5 - 1/3 in. long, in racemes 3-6 in long, stalk zig-zag,
downy. Pod 1/4 - 3-8
in. long, 2-seeded, downy.

Tolerably common in the same localities
as the last species forming the underwood in the forests. The
leaves and branches are used as brush, wood in thatchinf.
