An erect often gregarious
shrub, 4-6 ft. high, with ribed grey-downy branches. Leaves
3-foliolate ; lateral leaflets 1 1/2-2 2 1/2 by 3/4-1 in., both
elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, generally acute, rounded at the
base, pubescent beneath. Flowers
1/5 - 1/3 in. long, in 2-6, flowered umbels, each umbel subtended
by a pair of persistent, orbicular, foliaceous bracts about 1/2
in. diam., the umbels themselves in axillary and terminal racemes
folded lehgthwise, 4-10 in. long. Pod
1/4 in. long, generally with 2 joints, constricted at both sutures.

Met with in most forests, generally
in damp places. The wood is hard, yellowish-white, and being of
small size can only be used for fuel.
