A tall perennial, sweet
scented grass. Culms about 6 ft. straw coloured, smooth and glabrous.
Leaves lanceolate from
a cordate or amplexicual base ; leaf-sheath smoth. Inflorescence
contracted panicles of many pairs or racemes, seated on a slender
peduncles emerging from a boat-shaped bract, turning into reddish
colour on maturity.

This grass is found all over the
State and is well-known on account of its economic value. It is
not a fodder grass yet cattle are seen eating it when young. There
are two varieties of this species 1. Motia. 2. Sofia.
