moderate-sized tree with a grey smooth Bark,
slightly fissured longitudinally. Leaves
1/2-1 ft. long. Leaflets
6-10 pairs, chartaceous, elliptic-oblong, tipped with a minute
sharp mucro ( a stiff and sharp point ) glabrous on both sides
; 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 in. long, stipules caducous. Flowers
yellow, petals 1/2 in. long. Racemes
often corymbose, arranged in a large pyramidal terminal panicle,
often 2 ft. long ; pedicels 1/2-1 in. long, bracts stiff, linear,
much shorter than pedicels. Pod
flat, thickened at sutures, minutely velvety, 4-10 in. long.

A native of Ceylon and is also found
in the extreme south of the Madras Presidency. Very commonly planted
in avenues along roadsides in Secunderabad, Hyderabad and other
places and also in gardens. wood is and not inferior to ebony,
with a dark brown to nearly black heartwood, in stripes of dark
and light. It makes a good furniture wood. It is a handsome tree
with bright yellow flowers and very ornamental. A very good species
for covering denuded areas and in aforestation works. The tree
is not browsed by animals. It can grow in almostany kind of soil.
In suitable conditions it is a very fast growing species but gets
diseased after 12 to 15 years.
