Annual or perennial culms up to 4 to 6 ft., base shortly decumbent.
Leaf blade convolute,
filiform, smooth or scraberulous; sheath with rounded auricle;
ligule a ridge of hairs. Inflorescence of spreading terminal panicle,
made up of spikelets. Spikelets
purplish, one flowered, from the top of which a tripartite awn
issues.

It is found in sandy, dry or rocky
places all over the State. Not eaten by cattle or sometimes eaten
after teh fall of the tripid awns. Culms after removing the sheatg
are made into sweeps and brooms. It is also used for thatching
roofs.
