A moderate-sized deciduous
tree. Bark dark-grey,
smooth. Leaflets linear,
15-24 pairs; Pinnae
6-15. Flowers yellow,
fragrant, 1/2 in. long, to the end of stamens; peduncles fasciculate
in the axils of the uppermost leaves. Pods
5-8 by in., edges undulate.

A very common tree in all the forests,
with generally a short bole and very crooked branches. Wood very
hard; sapwood large white; heartwood purplish-brown, beautifully
mottled with alternate, concentrie, light and dark bands, strong,
fibrous, stiff and close-grained, hard and durable, superior to
Teak in transverse strength and direct cohesive power. It is used
for the beams of native houses and carts, the crooked branches
for ploughs and the leaves for washing the hair. It also makes
an excellent fuel. Flowers April to June. It can be easily raised
from seeds.
