An extremely thorny
scandent shrub. Branchlets,
petioles and peduncles tomentose or pubescent, armed with numerous
sharp recurved prickles. Leaflets
acid, 10-20 pairs, on each pinna with a small old one near the
vase, 1/2 to 1/2 in. long, linear, from an unequal sided base,
pale green above, glaucous beneath ; midrib somewhat diagonal
; pinnae 4-6 pairs, common petiole of leaf 4-8 in. long, with
a large gland about 1/2 in. above the base, and a smaller one
between the uppermost pinnae. Flowers
yellow ; flower-buds purple ; heads in dense panicles at the ends
of branches ; panicles 3-4 ft. long. interrupted with leaves at
the base of the ramiofications. Pods
3-4 by about 1 in., straight, thick, fleshy 6-10 seeded, slightly
indented between the seeds.

Met with generally in cultivation and, rarely, found growing wild
on the Aurangabad ghats. The pods are used for washing the hair
and the acid leaves are eaten. Flowers March to July.
Note :- The
Australian Species A. dealbata, link., and A. melanoxylon R. Br.
are now mostly cultivated. The Australian ------------
"black wottle A. decurrens" is providing useful in afforesting
dry and arid arears.
